Bekendmaking keynote spreker: Wayne Modest

Het is ons een eer om niemand minder dan Prof. Dr. Wayne Modest bekend te maken als tweede keynote spreker van de Historicidagen 2019. Modest is directeur van het Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen en het Research Centre for Material Culture (RCMC). Het RCMC is een onderzoekscentrum in een internationaal netwerk, dat met verrijkende ontmoetingen rondom collectie van het museum van Wereldculturen een groot publiek wil inspireren om met een open blik te kijken naar de wereld, de mens en diens cultuur en bij wil dragen aan wereldburgerschap. Daarnaast is Modest bijzonder hoogleraar Material Culture and Critical Heritage aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.  Tot slot is Modest nauw betrokken bij Words Matter, een onderzoekspublicatie over mogelijk gevoelige woorden in de museale sector. Deze publicatie draagt bij aan de dialoog over het woordgebruik in de museumwereld en sluit aan bij het maatschappelijke debat over de vraag of bepaalde woorden nog wel van deze tijd zijn. In zijn werk en onderzoek streeft Modest naar meer historisch contingente manieren om het heden te begrijpen, met name op het gebied van matieriële cultuur en museale collecties.

Prof. Dr. Wayne Modest is the head of the National Museum of World Cultures and the Research Centre for Material Culture. The Research Centre is a research institute within the Tropenmuseum (Amsterdam), Museum Volkenkunde (Leiden) and the Afrikamuseum (Berg en Dal) that serves as a focal point for research on ethnographic collections in the Netherlands. Modest is currently a professor by special appointment of Material Culture and Critical Heritage at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Modest is also involved with the research publication of Words Matter, about the recent controversy in the Netherlands surrounding whether museums should change the titles of some of their paintings and refrain from using discriminatory words in wall texts or catalogues is in part the lead up to this publication and symposium series. In his activities and research, Modest’s work is driven by a concern for more historically contingent ways of understanding the present, especially in relation to material culture/museum collections.
